Used and abused by caretakers and significant others, they developed early on an image of themselves as mere “sex objects,” persons of little value whose sole contribution to life is the sexual gratification of others. Seeing themselves as mere objects, they lack self-esteem and, hence, are unable to develop the necessary boundaries for their own self-protection.

When one grows up thinking that their apparent purpose in life is to be used sexually, it is no surprise that they become prostitutes or porno queens, for they mistakenly believe that sexuality is all they have to offer. What these victims of abuse so desperately need is genuine love and care, something they were denied in important ways in their formative years. They need to learn that they are valuable in the sight of God and their value is not associated with their sexuality. If we Christians condemn them, we are only contributing to the abuse to which they are accustomed and confirming the low image they already harbor about themselves. Far better is to offer them love, affirmation and acceptance as human beings already reconciled to God in Christ. We must help them develop new identities, to learn that they are new creations in Christ so that the old may be gone and the new can come. As we mirror to others the love of Christ, we become vehicles for transformation and healing.

If a practicing prostitute or porn queen came to my church, how would I react? I pray to God I would offer them the same hand of love and welcome that I offer anyone else.

Martin M. DavisMartin M.
